This Is How to Enjoy Your First Dance

Part of Your guide to a relaxed wedding with photos you look amazing in!

Ah, the first dance. Whether you think it’s important or not, the chances are everyone will be expecting you to do one. Honestly though, there aren’t many people who relish the thought of dancing around while others stand and watch, so if you’re feeling a little nervous about it – you’re in good company!

We’ve seen a lot of different approaches to the ‘First Dance’ over the years, and gradually, we’ve learnt a few things that you can do to help your photographer get gorgeous photos – even if you’re dreading the whole situation. Whether you’re super excited about throwing some moves on the dance floor, or hoping you can get it over and done with ASAP – here are just a few ideas to get you started!

Being prepared doesn’t have to mean simply choosing the song you’re dancing to. If you really want to be prepared, you can plan your every move, literally. Choreographed dances can work super well, and you don’t have to be a pro! Whether you choose to do something romantic, or something a little sillier, you’re free to plan something that you guys feel totally comfortable performing in front of your friends and family. You might even find that knowing exactly what you’ll be doing takes the pressure off a little bit, as long as you’re not too worried about forgetting your moves, of course!

Fill the dance floor

If you’re the kind of person who really doesn’t like to be the center of attention, a ton of people staring at you whilst you dance probably sounds like something straight out of a nightmare. It really doesn’t have to be! If you want a first dance without having ‘all eyes on you’, or even if you just want everyone to have fun – fill the dance floor! You’ll feel more relaxed, your family and friends will feel super involved, and the photos will show that you all had a blast together – that’s surely a first dance that everyone will remember.

DJ Lights

Don’t get me wrong, lasers and colourful lights can create a real fun atmosphere – but they’re not romantic – at all. Leave them for when your guests take to the dance floor! If you’re having the traditional, romantic first dance, maybe ask the DJ to leave the party lights off for 5 minutes, or at the very least, to use neutral colours. Nothing breaks my heart more, when it comes to editing, than a beautiful first dance photo where everybody has bright green faces. Don’t let it happen to you, keep the lighting low-key – it’s much more flattering.

Why don’t you try dancing in the moonlight? Everybody will feel warm and bright. It’s such a fine and natural sight – dancing in the moonlight! Thanks to Toploader for inspiring this section. Seriously though, a first dance out under the stars is super romantic, and it will look gorgeous in photographs. Just be sure to think about lighting properly, fairy lights and candles are your best friends!

Fairy lights in general

Outdoors? Add fairy lights. Indoors? Add fairy lights. Underwater? Add fairy lights. Just kidding. Seriously though, add these wondrous creations to just about any environment and it’ll look like the most romantic setting ever. I could elaborate but honestly, that’s all there is to it! Warm, glowy lighting that looks gorgeous in photographs – you’d struggle to go wrong with this one!

Special effects

I’m not talking about adding some crazy science-fiction-esque CGI to your wedding day, but adding something to give your first dance a bit of ‘oomph’ can make the photos look really unique, and you can be sure your friends and family will always remember it! These two weddings below come to mind instantly when I think about unique first dances, they’re so different to what people usually expect! And you really don’t have to be super crazy with it, simplicity is key!

Ultimately – you just need to relax. Be yourselves and have fun! Over the years we’ve found that even those who have truly dreaded the first dance loved it in the end. Truthfully, we’ve shot first dances that have lasted less than a minute, and still managed to get lovely, romantic shots. Although important – it’s a very small part of the day and will be over before you know it, so make it memorable, you’ll be fine!
